Motatapu’s community spirit: Over $15,000 raised for local trusts

The rugged terrain of the Motatapu Valley, typically a stage for gruelling athletic feats, recently played host to a different kind of triumph: a substantial charitable contribution. Organisers of the annual Motatapu off-road event have announced that the 2025 edition successfully raised $13,396 for the Queenstown Trails Trust, along with $1,000 each for the Southern Lakes Sanctuary and the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust, demonstrating the event’s deep-rooted commitment to the region.

For over a decade, the Queenstown Trails Trust has been a beneficiary of the event, receiving a portion of each competitor’s entry fee. This ongoing partnership underscores the symbiotic relationship between the event and the trails that form its challenging courses. The trails, which wind through the Whakatipu Basin and Mahu Whenua, are not merely a backdrop for the race; they are a vital community asset, providing recreational opportunities and fostering a connection with the natural environment. Mark Williams, CEO of the Trust, acknowledged the profound impact of the donation, emphasising its role in sustaining the trust’s work.

Beyond recreation, the trails serve as a crucial conduit for environmental conservation. The Southern Lakes Sanctuary utilises these paths for predator control, a critical initiative in protecting New Zealand’s vulnerable native birdlife. The event’s organisers have recognised this essential work by allocating funds to the sanctuary, demonstrating a commitment to ecological preservation alongside athletic achievement.

The Motatapu’s remote setting, while a draw for adventure seekers, also presents logistical challenges, particularly in the realm of emergency medical response. The reliance on the Otago Rescue Helicopter highlights the inherent risks of such events and the critical role of these services in ensuring participant safety. Gemma Peskett, the race director, expressed gratitude for the helicopter’s invaluable service, acknowledging the peace of mind it provides to both organisers and competitors. The donation to the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust will bolster the helicopter’s capabilities, ensuring it remains equipped to handle emergencies in the challenging terrain.

The event itself, which drew 2,600 participants across five disciplines, is a testament to the enduring appeal of off-road endurance challenges. Participants from across New Zealand, and internationally, were drawn to the unique event. The 52km ultra run, 42km trail marathon, 47km mountain bike, 15km trail run, and 4km kids’ trail offered a diverse range of experiences, catering to athletes of varying abilities. Beyond the physical challenge, the event fosters a sense of community, uniting participants in a shared appreciation for the region’s natural beauty and a commitment to its preservation.

The funds raised through the Motatapu event will have a lasting impact on the Queenstown region, supporting both its recreational infrastructure and its environmental health. It is a reminder that sporting events can serve as powerful catalysts for community development and environmental stewardship.
