Hawke’s Bay biodiversity projects get $110,000 funding boost

Community organisations, Habitat restoration

Community groups in Hawke’s Bay working to protect and restore local biodiversity are set to benefit from a significant funding boost. Applications open on Thursday, March 27th, 2025, for the Biodiversity Hawke’s Bay Environmental Enhancement Contestable Fund, offering grants ranging from $1,000 to $15,000.

This year’s fund, totaling $110,000, is supported by a new partnership between the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, the Eastern & Central Community Trust (ECCT), and Biodiversity Hawke’s Bay. The Regional Council has contributed $50,000, with the new partnership adding an additional $60,000.

The funding aims to remove financial barriers that often hinder community-led conservation efforts. “This funding makes sure those working on the ground have the support they need to continue making a real difference,” said Natalie de Burgh, Senior Biodiversity Advisor at the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.

Biodiversity Hawke’s Bay General Manager Debbie Monahan encouraged community groups with project ideas to apply, stating the grants would “allow people to take action for nature” and have “long-term impacts on the biodiversity of our region.”

Applications will be accepted until May 1st, 2025, via biodiversityhb.org. Successful applicants will have until June 30th, 2026, to complete their projects.
