Testing the market for roading services – Kaipara District Council

Kaipara District Council has gone to the open market for a new roading contractor as the current contract with Ventia comes to a close.

Ventia has held the roading services contract with the council for six years, with their initial four year contract extended by a further two. Last month Elected Members voted not to extend the contract further and to test the market for options. Earlier this month the Council sought Expressions of Interest, which are now being evaluated. Ventia was encouraged to put an application in to this process.

Anin Nama, General Manager Infrastructure, says roading is a critical service and it’s important to test the market.

“Roads have always been a point of pain – for our communities and for us. A significant portion of our budget goes into roading but there’s never enough,” says Anin. “We’re responsible for making sure we get the best value for money and our providers deliver high quality work. That’s what this is about.”

The Council has also commissioned an independent report to consider options around the way roading and transport services are provided in our district.
