Funding the Future: 2024 Research Report by the Australian Investment Council and EY

The Australian Investment Council and EY are pleased to release our 2024 Research Report: Funding the Future: opportunities to grow Australia’s private capital investment, boost jobs and turn ideas into thriving businesses.

The capital required to fund a prosperous Australian future is significant; $1.5 trillion is needed by 2030 to achieve net zero emissions, $115 billion will be needed for health, aged and disability care between 2024 and 2062, and $30 billion is required to revive our manufacturing sector.

In Funding the Future, the Australian Investment Council and EY put forward a series of recommendations for policymakers to address our investment challenge: growing the overall pool of investment capital available to meet our growing needs and futureproofing our economy.

EY’s economic modelling shows that increasing private capital investment to the equivalent of 4% of GDP in 2030 (up from 3% in 2022) could double the economic contribution made by private capital to $144 billion by 2030 and double the number of direct and indirect full-time jobs to 1,200,000.

The Report is the result of nine months of research between the Council and EY, and is based insights from the Council’s Board members, perspectives from industry leaders and detailed analysis of Australia’s existing regulatory and policy frameworks.
