Network banners on customer’s phones will display “Kia Ora” to celebrate Māori Language Week

One New Zealand is saying “Kia Ora” and helping spread te reo Maōri via its network banner, to commemorate Māori Language Week.

Māori Engagement Lead, Rob Selwyn (Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Whakatōhea), says: “We were discussing how to celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori in an authentic, One New Zealand way, and decided what better way to proudly help promote Te Wiki o te Reo Māori than by updating our network banner.

“This means that all One New Zealand customers will see ‘Kia Ora’ proudly displayed on their phones for the week.”

The theme for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2024 is Ake Ake Ake – A Forever Language. One New Zealand has proudly supported this kaupapa in the past, and is pleased to continue in 2024.

“We want to do our part to uphold te reo Maōri as a thriving language. Internally, we’ll be celebrating Te Wiki ō te Reo Māori by running a ‘Kia ora’ wero. Though ‘Kia ora’ is already comfortably normalised within One NZ, we will support our team to use the greeting at appropriate opportunities during the week. We’ll have prizes for kaimahi up for grabs, to encourage everyone to get behind it.”

‘Kia Ora’ will be displayed on the One NZ network banner between 16-23 September.
